Being comfortable with your surroundings or around people plays a key role in how we interact with them. It is a state of ease defined by free and easy sharing of thoughts, banter and ideas.
A few of us find it somewhat difficult to be at ease when around people of the opposite sex. We become anxious and shy, avoid eye contact, stutter, and start to mix words up.
This is not an affliction. It is a state you can rise above on your own following the tips herein discussed.
1. Be well dressed :
Before you head out, make sure you are well dressed. Apart from giving a good first impression of yourself, it bolsters your self confidence.
It also means there is one less thing to worry about while you are around a person or people of the opposite sex. Being well dressed is not restricted to just what you are wearing. It includes having a good personal hygiene.
2. Remember they might be nervous too:
Being nervous isn't bad, it just means something important is happening. You have to remember that the other person might be nervous too, especially if it is the first meet. On your part, do not let your nervousness boil over as it might make the other person more anxious too.
Play it cool and let the chips fall where they may.
3. Be genuine :
Be yourself. There is no need to lose yourself in order to impress anyone. It may also backfire because your true self will eventually appear. Remember that genuine people appreciate genuineness in others.
4. Listen well :
One admirable quality to have is to be able to listen. Do not be too much in love with the sound of your voice. Listen to the other person.
Make your conversations 80% listening and 20% talking. Do not just be quiet, but actively listen to what they are saying.
The more you listen, the better you are able to ascertain the type of person you are with and where his/her interests lie.
5. Greet with smile :
This might sound obvious as most of us already do this whenever we are with someone of the opposite sex. Smiling disarms people and eases the tension in a room.
The more smile you show, the more smile you will receive.
With just one gesture, you can make both you and the other person less anxious. So, when meeting someone for the first or umpteenth time, greet them with a smile.
6. Having a good sense of humor :
Nothing breaks the tension like a good laugh. This is not asking that you force it, but if you have something humorous to share, share it.
Having a good sense of humor also includes taking jokes in stride even if you are the target and understanding that it is just in jest and not really an attack on your person.
This way, you do not feel like you should tiptoe around nor does the other person feel like they should tiptoe around you.
7. Be calm:
Being calm plays a key role in your interaction with a person of the opposite gender as you are prone to making fewer mistakes.
Before heading to a planned meet, remind yourself that you need to always keep your cool. Don't be too stiff or tense and don't hold any expectations for the meeting.
8. Do not flirt too much :
Some people think they can break the ice by flirting, but this doesn't work all the time. What you should always look out to do instead is to be comfortable and to make the other person comfortable.
Flirting can have the opposite effect or can present you as a clingy, desperate person. Go at it as though you are making a friend.
Following these tips will ease the tension when meeting another person of the opposite sex. Like making a normal friend, listen to the other person and try to make them feel comfortable.
Don't give an off impression of being too tense. Smile and show you're friend. Finally, don't hold any expectations of the meeting, go with the flow.
